HD allows the TV to DISPLAY better resolution (i.e. clearer) pictures IF you feed a HD signal into it.
HD TVs will also display normal TV pictures too but they’ll only be as clear as a normal (i.e. non-HD) TV.
So if you use a current Freeview box you’ll get normal quality pictures.
There are no HD Freeview boxes yet, but then the BBC etc don’t broadcast HD Freeview signals yet either!
If you want to get HD pictures you need to subscribe to Sky HD or NTL/Telewest’s HD services. But only some programs are actually in HD.
Basicall HD ready means that you’ll be ready to watch HD programs when they start broadcasting them on a more general basis.
And yes then you’ll need a new HD Freeview box, HD DVD player etc to take advantage… (bit of a marketing con? I’m not sure, but there is a slight whiff about it)

a hd tv will still show sd pictures/programs. your stb wont be able to receive hd broadcast. any hd receiving equipment will need to be connected to your tv via a hdmi cable not scart

you need a signal such as Verizon FiOS TV to get HD quality pictures.
