Price is a good guide. Basically, you get what you pay for. The cheap sets are poor quality, they often fail in interesting ways just after the guarantee expires. They also have low quality technical specifications, particularly in their sound.
Stick to the well known brands, avoid supermarket “own brands” and buy the best that you can afford – not the cheapest that you can get.
Regardless of screen size – Look at Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, LG.
Buy from a shop rather than on-line. If it goes wrong you want to have somewhere to take it back to for a whine.
Preferably buy from John Lewis. They give you a free extended guarantee, everyone else charges hundreds of pounds.
Make sure that your new tv has enough SCART sockets for your existing equipment: video recorder, Sky box, DVD player, etc.
Consider what it will look like as a piece of furniture in your living room when you’re not watching it. Remember that the family has to live with this thing. An almighty 50″ plasma may look good in the shop but it may overwhelm your house.
